Introducing Darts Betting
It’s a simple game - players throw three darts at a time to lower their scores from 501 to exactly 0. It’s easy to play, fun to watch and found in most pubs - darts has always been popular. In the 1990s, the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) took darts from a pub game to a professional sport and never looked back.
Thanks to the high level of competitors, pub-style venues, iconic atmospheres and brilliant marketing by bookies, darts betting has flourished. While most bookies will offer a wide range of markets, from pre-match to in-play, only selected ones will feature livestreaming. These markets allow you to wager on wins, 180s, big fish, highest finishes or handicaps, and can be picked per leg, set or match.
Since darts is such a quick sport, in-play betting is probably it’s most exciting part. When matches are live, you can wager on legs, 180s, checkouts or round winners.
How Does Scoring Work in Darts?

Firstly, the darts board is divided into 20 segments, each representing a score from 1 to 20. There are two red and green rings - an outer ring that gives you double points, and an inner ring that is worth triple. The centre of the board features a green ring worth 25 points called the semi, and the bullseye is worth 50 points.
Players start with a score of 501 and the objective is to get that score down to 0 in as few throws as possible. To win a leg, players must hit a double and end with a 0 score (for example: if your score is 20, you must hit a double 10 to finish). The highest score in one turn (3 dart throws) is 180 - 3 triple 20s.
The fewest darts you need to win a leg is 9 - the pinnacle of the sport -, a nine-darter. Commonly, this is done by throwing 7 triple 20s, a triple 19 and a double 12. There have only been 96 televised 9-darters since 1984.
Another rare feat is the highest checkout - the Big Fish -, worth 170 points. We’d need 2 double 20s and a bullseye to win a leg.
Most Popular Darts Betting Markets
There are many ways to bet on darts - some tournament-based, and others centred on the finer details of a darts match. Below, we have highlighted a few classic PDC darts betting markets that can often be worth a punt on.
Outright tournament bets are the ones in which the bettor predicts who will win any given tournament. It’s a great darts bet thanks to how close the competition has become.
/ Bet on which player you think will win a particular match of darts. It’s that simple. And with many matches happening on the same day in a tournament, you can make some brilliant accumulator bets.
As we now know, darts matches are broken down into legs, which win sets. Bettors can wager on who will win the next set, how many sets in total, above/under a certain number of sets and so on.
An almost exclusively in-play market, betting on the winner of the next leg is perfect for a quick bet. It’s a bet on who’ll be quicker to get from 501 to 0.
/ The famous nine-darter is the highest possible checkout from 501, the starting figure of darts. Think of it as the equivalent of a 147 break in snooker. It’s a yes or no bet, on whether it will happen in a match. It’s rare, so the darts betting odds are massive for this feat.
This is an easy bet where you are backing a player to score the most 180’s (the highest possible score in one turn) in a nominated game, leg or set.
Handicap betting in darts, and indeed all sports, works by applying additional points, either plus or minor, to players. This is done to level the playing field between two competitors. The bigger the skill difference between players, the bigger the handicap applied by the bookmakers. This can be found especially in Darts World Championship betting sites, since the first rounds have some major mismatches.
